Long-distance move from New York to California

Happy I found United Moving Services.

I needed to move for business purposes across the country and really needed a moving company that would understand the importance of this move. I was getting the position of my dreams and wanted to be settled in prior to starting. I called so many companies and was either dissatisfied with their quotes, available moving dates, or the reps I spoke to. I was just about fed up, until I spoke with United Moving Services out of my home town of NY. I spoke with Mike who was very understanding of my needs. He managed to work out a great deal and excellent moving date for me. He was very attentive to what I was telling him about my move and personal belongings, he even offered me advice! I never came across that before. The day of my move arrived and the movers were loading the truck, they were really cautious with my belongings and were total professionals. Everything arrived in tact and as they were prior to moving. All of my family heirlooms and paintings were in perfect shape upon arrival thanks to them really making sure to care for my fragile pieces. United Moving Services and Mike totally took the stress of moving away and allowed me to be more focused on my new career. I cannot begin to express my gratitude enough!

Long-distance move from Colorado to California

Worst Moving Company.

As they say usually you only see reviews if someone has a really good or really bad experience. This is absolutely the latter and I write it so that no one experiences was we did or uses this company.   If they had a lower rating I would pick it. My wife (who is disabled) and I recently moved across country from Denver, CO to San Jose, CA. Below is a summary (which had to be shortened down for the sake of brevity) of how bad this company is:   1. The salesperson was professional and courteous but after that it all wend downhill. I was told I had to reserve my move for $1K at that time or the price would change. When I asked if I could cancel I was told numerous times that yes I was still in the 14day window. Quess what I called back THAT NIGHT (two hours later) and no one answered. First issue they only keep East COast hours when they service people all over the US..second was because they did not call me back until the next day I could not cancel so now I am stuck with this company.   2. Inventory confusion/misdirection: I was told numerous times "a box is a box" and we average it out so just tell me how many medium boxes you have. WE called back three times to update our inventory to ensure it was accurate for the movers. When the movers got there they told us they wouldn't take our non-medium boxes. Phones calls and emails later no resolution so we had to pay since our stuff was already loaded on the truck (add $800 extra dollars)   3. Move date lies: we were told to our face that our furniture would be guaranteed here in Cali on 4/30. I called the morning and of and guess what? My furniture had not even LEFT the warehouse in Colorado. After having to pay additional funds for hotel, meals, etc. and losing days off at work they did nothing and a week later our stiff finally arrived. Only one guy showed up to unload so I had to help the movers I HIRED to move me..and I had to put together my beds   4. Customer Service. I reached out many times and every time I called I was redirected to someone else. No one has offered to reimburse us for anything and has not even said I'm sorry.   If you like being lied to, someone who doesn't care about you as a person or how they can help, lacks empathy, charges you more and more money (our final bill including hotels due to the missed delivery date was $1500 more than our original quote) then these guys are your company.   If not do not ever use them. In summary: worst move I have ever done, worst moving company I have ever worked with. You can clearly tell as brokers they only want your money and once they have it you are on your own.

Official company response

Unfortunately, a lot of this review is fabricated and false. As a consumer, you have choices. No one forced you to secure your reservation by leaving a deposit. You were told quite frankly that the price cannot be guaranteed until a deposit is left and you then chose to leave a deposit. The signed estimate clearly shows the instructions on how you can cancel your move. You don't need to speak with anyone - an email would have been enough to cancel your reservation and have your deposit refunded if you cancel within the time frame specified on your estimate. In your case you did not. Moving forward, all of our calls are recorded and we listened to your conversation where you were NEVER told a box is a box. You advised that you did not know the size of the boxes so let's list medium sized boxes for now. You did call in several times from the day you placed your reservation to the day you were picked up and made adjustments to your inventory but you never addressed the "Medium" boxes you asked to be listed on your estimate. When the movers arrived, they most certainly would have taken your "Non-Medium" boxes but not at Medium box prices. The main reason your price went up $800 however had nothing to do with the boxes and more so to do with the 26 extra items (all of large size) that were not on the itemized inventory list. It was disclosed to you on numerous occassions that you pay for what you move - in your case you paid for an extra 26 large items that came out to $800. Regarding the delivery date, none of your paperwork has a guaranteed delivery date listed. Matter of fact, there is no delivery date listed outside of the standard delivery spread that is provided for a trip your distance and your belongings arrived well in advance of those dates. I asked you on numerous occassions to fax or email over any paperwork that showed a guaranteed delivery date but you could not produce anything. With regards to the customer service lie and being passed around to different people - I spoke with you 90% of the time that you called. I apologize that I wasn't available to speak with you the other 10% of the time but I did everything I could to try and accommodate your requests. You did not produce any of the documents you stated you have showing any of the things you are claiming here. How can anyone help you if you do not have anything to substantiate your claims? I do apologize if you did not have a good experience and still welcome the opportunity to make things right if you send me the paperwork you claim to have. I need to see something which shows a guaranteed delivery date and I need to see the itemized list of what was loaded onto the vehicle as you've stated what was loaded onto the vehicle is exactly what was on your itemized list, however I have a list that contains 26 additional large items. So as I mentioned in my last email and message to you, please send these items over and we can discuss further.

Horrible Moving Company.

Do not give your money or possessions to United Moving Services!   I recently used them for my relocation from Philaldelphia to Southern California.   Here are the details of the HORRENDOUS experience:1. United's sales representative, Mike, confirmed a pickup date and four-hour time window before I made the final booking; this was necessary as my Philadelphia building manager required appointments for the use of the loading dock, with very limited availability.   My booking with United was contingent upon the fact that the date and time would be available.  Mike affirmed that the pick-up could and would be executed during my scheduled move-out window with the building.  Two days prior to the move date, I found out that no truck had been confirmed, let alone a pick-up window.    Upon request to refund my deposit, the regional call center was finally able to reshuffle and accommodate me.  Meanwhile, I was subject to hours of frustration as I tried to work out alternatives with the building manager.2. The contracted carrier, US Moving run by Sal and hired by United, showed up on moving day and charged me $700 more than the estimated quoted price.   It is worth noting here that I never had an official QA call, as initially discussed.   Sal demanded 75% of the total cost at pickup, despite the fact that United had clarified previously that it would be 50% of the balance.  At that point, my items had already been loaded onto the truck and I had no choice but to pay him.  He then bullied me into tipping his staff who also happened to be his also his friends and relatives.3. Mover (named Sal) was extremely unprofessional, rude, and disrespectful throughout the entire process - he yelled at me on the phone multiple times when I called to check up on the status of the move.   Who YELLS at a customer?   To any reasonable person this conduct borders on abusive and is unacceptable.4. Once you give United your money, do not expect anyone you call at the company to return your phone calls when you leave messages.  They will not.5. Once the cross country truck was loaded, both I and United's customer service team, faced extreme difficulty tracking down the dispatcher/truck, leaving us in an uninformed position where we had no information as to where the truck was, let alone when to expect delivery of my belongings.  Moreover, the dispatcher never returned any attempts at communication.  At one point, I considered filing a police report as I feared that my load had been held hostage, which I understand from reading various moving industry related websites is a scam employed by non-reputable moving companies.6. It took over a MONTH for delivery of my items.  This is despite the fact that before booking my move with United, the sales representative confirmed and assured that the approximate delivery date would be no later than July 9th, 2015 (pick-up occurred on June 27th, 2015).  This confirmation was essential because of an important existing personal obligation which required that I fly out of California during the week of July 13th, 2015.  This therefore required that my delivery take place before then.  However, as it transpired, my belongings were sitting idly in a warehouse and not loaded onto the truck to cross the country until July 19th, 2015 after multiple rescheduling excuses and lies, only to arrive on August 4th, 2015. During this time, I have had to reschedule multiple trips (adding to excess costs) and missed a family member's wedding.   7. Upon delivery, inspection of our items showed significant damage to my desk, dining table and mattress, not to mention a handful of boxes (see photos).8. I have written a formal letter to United's Corporate offices regarding this experience, as suggested by their customer service center, and have not heard back. 9. If after reading all of this and you still wish to work with United, be sure to save down or print screen a copy of your original contract with them.   Once the order is picked up, the email link to the contract will no longer function.Otherwise, save your stuff, save your money, save yourselves and DO NOT trust this company with your belongings!    I would have given them zero or negative stars if possible.

Long-distance move from Maryland to Florida

The move that never happened.

Please beware of this company. They tell serious lies and are very unprofessional and make things up as they talk to you. My relocation move never happened with them and I lost $750 , $600 was for a deposit for my relocation move from Maryland to Florida and $150 for the auto transporters that I also used through United Movers. Read your contract carefully and check your articles list. I found that I was being charged twice for the same articles that were listed and still had to be boxed. I was sent movers (Unlimited Van Lines) through United Movers a day earlier on a Sunday and when they showed up with a wrong contract, they wanted to charge me more money because of the cubic ft. being incorrect. That was an instant red flag to me and my trust with them was gone. Why is it called a Binding Moving Estimate, when there is nothing binding about their estimated contracts. I had already had money orders prepared for the pickup and delivery amounts quoted by United Movers. I had no one to call regarding this problem on the United Movers end nor the Unlimited Van Lines end, who promised me, that if I have any problems with their movers, they would be available to assist me. That was not true, lies. The movers got angry with me and left stating “they wouldn’t move me for $10,000. I didn’t ask them to leave, they left on their own accord. I was left without a mover and United Movers would not reimburse me my money ($600). I had to call another mover (local), they were great. They moved me the next day without any lies or problems. They were originally my first choice. I should have stuck with them.
I also ended up paying more money to the auto transporter, which I used through them also. Once again, Mike, the customer rep (with 10 yrs experience) which I used lied to me again. He told me, I could load my car with my belonging as long as I didn’t block the rear window view. Once the transporters saw my loaded car they charged me an extra $100.00 and told me the quoted price was incorrect from United Movers and charged me additional money, once again their lies. I would never, never use them again nor refer them to anyone. Run and never look back at this company. By the way, I am a senior on a fixed income. I wonder, if they would treat their mother this way, probably so.

Official company response

The only part of this review that is correct is that the move never did happen. That is because the customer sent the truck away. They did not leave on their own accord like Barbara mentions. Barbara provided an inventory list which was almost accurate but was off very slightly by a few items. Those items based on a visual inspection of the property conducted by the movers looked like they would be about an additional 50-80 cubic feet but the movers advised her they would need to load everything in the vehicle to confirm those numbers so they gave her a worst case scenario revised estimate. She didn't like that worst case scenario and she sent them away. Regarding the auto transport, client was told on 2 occassions not to load things in the back seat and if she wanted to she could load things in the trunk. On the day of her pickup she called in asking if she could load things in the back seat. We told her for the 3rd time that she could not but she advised it was too late. Her signed paperwork also specifically states not to leave items anywhere where they'd be visible in the vehicle.

Moving experience

United moving company is a broker. They have a great sales staff and you are asked to put down a deposit. United then chooses the carrier and takes no responsibility after. United did not return my calls, or emails. I was told to contact the carrier again and again. We did not receive our belongings for 29 days after the salesperson told us it would be 1-7 days. Our furniture was damaged, our walls were damaged and things are missing. The subcontractor hired was nonprofessional and rude. They left all the windows and doors, including the garage open when they left. This resulted in running out of heating fuel. Atlantic the subcontractor sent one man to move our house. They said the other movers didn't show up. The man dragged our furniture leaving a couch half in and half out of the door in the freezing rain. His boss responded," what else could he do".

Skip the broker. Ask your friends and relatives for referrals. Do not go on the internet. Atlantic s website, emails and phone number are not picked up. We were told one price and then that was increased because we had more than was on the inventory. My bed was broken, antique tables were chipped, one arrived with its leg broken off. Hire your own carrier, research them, and hopefully have a good move. Using United Moving and being subcontractor to Atlantic did not result in a satisfactory experience. It was horrific.

Long-distance move from Kentucky to Louisiana

Great company to work with. Fast and effective.

I've never been more pleased with a moving company. I had pickup scheduled for early morning and they arrived right on time as I finished taping my last box. They were in and out of my house within a few hour and had everything neatly arranged and secured on their truck. I felt really safe leaving my furniture and other possessions with them. I drove down to LA immediately after and they almost beat me there! They unloaded the truck and everything still looked great. They placed it wherever I needed it and I could watch as my house became a home. They kept in constant contact with me about the status of my order and overall I was very pleased. .

Excellent Service.

I was pleased with the service offered by united moving services. It really is service with a difference; from the moment they came in and secured all my furniture and boxes, I knew I had chosen the right company. They offer you the option of packing some of your stuff and then they come and ensure your furniture is safe and ready for transport. I am very happy that the movers were skilful and careful it wasn’t just a big rush where they were throwing my furniture around. They did everything at a good pace without dinging my items as they passed through the door.   I really liked the fact that I could have contacted them before hand to ensure that I got the service that I required. Their website provided all the information that I needed and I was satisfied leading up to my move, feeling confident that I was getting the right service. I really like the fact that they give you so many choices as it pertains to packing and unpacking and I had no problems whatsoever. I would use them again and I give them two thumbs up. .

Helped me move my grandma across the state!

I used United Moving Service a while back to help move my grandma across the state, and had a great experience.  I called ahead of time for a quote, and they were able to accommodate me on fairly short notice at a fair price.  On moving day, they arrived early with all necessary equipment (I mean, I don't have a dolly, come on), moving pads, and more.  The movers themselves were friendly and accommodating to my grandma, who was a little older at the time and couldn't do much to help things along.  The move to her next place was speedy, nothing arrived damaged, and I was charged the amount in the initial quote.  Experiences with movers can definitely be difficult as it's hard to entrust strangers with all of your belongings, but I would trust these guys again and again (if I were anywhere nearby, that is)!

Great, Nothing broken.

I had to move from Queens to Los Angeles a month ago when my company offered me a promotion. The movers were recomended to me by a friend who had recently moved to the city. They gave me a quote over the phone and after scheduling a time, we were ready to go. Everything went really smooth.  The guys got to my house right when they said they would early Friday morning and delivered everything to my new apartment a week later right when I needed it to get there. Nothing broken at all. Everything was in the same exact shape as when it left.
